Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG stands as a landmark in automotive history, serving as the first vehicle designed and built from the ground up entirely by Mercedes-AMG. Introduced in 2010 as the spiritual successor to the legendary 300 SL, it combined retro-inspired aesthetics with modern supercar performance. Its most defining feature is undoubtedly the gullwing doors, which swing upward to create a dramatic silhouette that pays homage to its 1950s ancestor while signaling a bold, new era for the AMG brand.

Underneath its long, sculpted hood lies the heart of the beast: a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine (codenamed M159). At its launch, this was one of the most powerful naturally aspirated production engines in the world, producing 563 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This massive power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle, allowing the SLS to rocket from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph).

The engineering behind the SLS AMG is as impressive as its straight-line speed. It features a lightweight aluminum spaceframe chassis that keeps the curb weight relatively low while maintaining high torsional rigidity. To optimize balance, the engine is mid-front mounted, and the use of dry-sump lubrication allows it to sit extremely low in the chassis, lowering the center of gravity. This setup, paired with a carbon-fiber driveshaft, ensures that the car handles with the precision and agility expected of a flagship grand tourer.

Inside, the cabin is a blend of aviation-inspired design and high-end luxury. The dashboard features "jet engine" air vents and a wide center console finished in genuine metal or carbon fiber, housing the AMG Drive Unit for personalized performance settings. Wrapped in premium Nappa leather, the interior manages to feel like a serious cockpit without sacrificing the comfort necessary for long-distance cruising. To address safety concerns regarding its unique doors, Mercedes famously installed pyrotechnic bolts in the hinges, which can blow the doors off in the event of a rollover to allow for an emergency exit.

Over its five-year production run, the SLS family expanded to include a Roadster variant with conventional doors, the more powerful GT, and the hardcore Black Series, which drew inspiration from the GT3 race car. It even saw a limited-production "Electric Drive" version that briefly held the title of the fastest electric production car. Though production ended in 2015 to make way for the Mercedes-AMG GT, the SLS AMG remains a highly coveted modern classic, celebrated for its thunderous exhaust note, iconic doors, and "last of a breed" naturally aspirated V8.
