Honda S2000

Honda S2000 has a front-engine, rear-drive chassis layout. This is not for nostalgia, but for maximum performance and driver space and comfort. The S2000 is not a bare-bones racer-replica but a fully-functional road car with all of the comforts and amenities expected in a modern car.

An innovative "high X-bone" modified backbone frame gived the S2000 greater rigidity than most closed cars, and improves the precision of its fully-independent double-wishbone suspension. Its lightweight alumunium alloy engine is placed behind the front axle centerline, helping to give near-50/50 weight distribution and concentrating the car's mass near its center of gravity for agile handling abilities normally associated with mid-engined designs.

The S2000's 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine has dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder, and the newest version of Honda's VTEC variable valve timing system. Its 153 lb-ft of torque is not unusual for a two-liter engine, but the 240 maximum horsepower certainly is -- it is the highest specific power output of US-legal engine at 120 hp per liter. Pump more air, make more power, and with a 9000 rpm rev limit, the S2000's engine pumps plenty of air. The torque peak is at 7500 rpm, and maximum power is developed at 8300 rpm. But thanks to VTEC, it pulls smoothly from 3000 rpm, and works as well in city traffic as on the race track. For the best speed, maximum use of the gears is necessary, but the short-throw six-speed gearbox is a joy to use.
